Oculofacial Plastic Surgery Research Fellowship
The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences Oculofacial Plastic Surgery division offers a research fellowship to provide medical students, medical graduates, or ophthalmologists, both from within the United States and international sites, with the experience necessary to become a successful clinical researcher.
The goal is to provide an opportunity for research fellows to conduct high-impact, evidenced-based projects that advance the field of Oculofacial Plastic Surgery. By performing these studies, we hope that our research fellows will contribute valuably to their local, national, and international communities.
Responsibilities
- Have a basic knowledge in Oculofacial Plastic Surgery field
- Perform scientific literature reviews
- Design evidence-based research projects
- Write research protocols and grant applications
- Submit research projects to an IRB
- Screen/Recruit patients for research studies
- Perform medical chart reviews
- Enter and analyze study data with biostatisticians
- Write and submit manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals
- Submit and present research results to different meetings
- Participate in ongoing research team meetings
Duration
The Oculofacial Plastic Surgery research fellowship is a 12-month training program with the option to extend to 24 months. The start date is flexible and will be determined once a candidate is accepted into the training program.
Eligibility and Application

- Passport size Photograph taken within the past 6 months
- Medical school diploma from an accredited World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) medical school (if applicable)
- Medical school transcript
- Medical license from the country of origin
- Ophthalmology residency/board diploma (if applicable)
- Fellowship certificate (If applicable)
- Score report for all steps of USMLE and ECFMG Certificate (if applicable)
- Three letters of recommendation addressed to Dr. Mohsen Kashkouli. (Strongly recommended from the ophthalmology department Chair).
- Personal statement (career goal, rationale for interest in ophthalmology/ oculofacial plastic surgery)
Your application is not complete until all required materials have been received. Research fellowship applications will be reviewed year round and scheduled subject to availability.
Note: The research program is self-funded by the applicant for the duration of the program, including all living expenses. The fellow will be defined as a “Visiting Scholar” with the University of Louisville School of Medicine and the Department of Ophthalmology does not provide any funding.
TRAVEL/VISA
In order to travel and reside in the United States during the length of your fellowship, you must obtain a J-1 visa. Please allow few months, depending on your country of residence, to complete the process.
